The goal was to create a product that transforms how athletes train.

Radar Pace is a true combination of Oakley’s heritage in performance innovation with Intel’s expertise in technology. Made up of Oakley eyewear with integrated earbuds and microphone as well as a mobile app for iOS and Android.

In collaboration with Intel, we designed and prototyped a training app that paired seamlessly with Radar Pace. The team worked closely with Oakley as well as the internal hardware and software engineers continuously testing and refining. As the hardware was modified, app flows were adjusted, wireframes modified and designs updated.

Oakley comes at their products from a design first perspective. Therefore the complex technology and science behind the glasses needed to be transformed into an intuitive visual language. Radar Pace is continuously analyzing and collecting data during an individuals' workout.  These metrics include heart rate, power output, speed, cadence, distance and time. Each metric needed to be easily digestible for an athlete during and after their workouts.

The biggest benefit of Radar Pace is the accountability of having a coach there with you, watching you, and guiding you. With smart technology, the device collects and analyzes the user’s performance data. It then relays the information back to the athlete through the eyewear’s natural voice interaction. This allows users to ask Radar Pace questions, receive actionable feedback and adjust instantly.

Throughout the experience, the biggest challenge was conveying the real speech functionality clearly to new users. We worked extensively with the research team to test and modify the best introductory experience with Radar Pace. We learned that simple, targeted prompts can teach athletes to consistently interact with their coach and check in for their latest metrics and progress.
